A Presence in the Darkness

Darkness. Sometimes its scary. Darkness can be evil. The unknown can lurk there. Sometimes we prefer to be left in the dark, a protective layer between us and the pain of knowing. It is a space between us and that thing that threatens, hurts, demands to be dealt with - that thing that feels bigger than us, more than we can handle.

Did God create darkness? Genesis does not answer this question, but Isaiah 45:7 says, I form the light, and create darkness...

My heart has been so aware, lately, so filled with gratitude, that God is not afraid of the dark. It has been pressed on my heart, over and over again, that God is in the dark places. He goes into the darkness, into the places most unworthy of His presence, the places where He is most needed, although sometimes least sought. He goes where I would never want to go. He is in the crack house, the whore house, under the bridge, in the back alley. He goes into the darkness of a doubt-filled, depressed, anxious mind. He is in broken, hurting hearts. He is present in earth-shattering, this-is-the-end-of-life-as-I-know-it moments.

He is here. He is here in the good, the glorious moments when His praise is ready on our lips. He is here in the bad. Whether we praise Him in the storm, question Him, doubt Him, fear Him, even when we turn our backs on Him, He is here. He is here for us and He is here for the hurting, desperate, broken people we know, love, reach out to, throughout our lives. For what He has done: then, now, always; I am grateful.
